The Alpharetta City Council has approved a $95,075 contract to replace emergency power generators at Fire Stations 82, 83 and 84 after staff said they exceed the typical 20-year life span for the equipment.

“Along with replacing the aging generators, the new ones will be converted from diesel to natural gas,” staff said. “Generators running on natural gas are less expensive to maintain and will not need to be refueled if ever cut on due to power failure.”

Under its five-year contract with the city, Energy Systems Southeast LLC will conduct monthly inspections, maintain log books, clean generators and do a yearly tune-up or manufacturer-recommended maintenance.

The city plans to convert all its generators to natural gas using recurring capital money each year as the budget allows, staff said. Once these three generators are replaced, only three more will need to be converted.
