Alpharetta has called a community meeting to gather public comment for an ongoing study that officials say seeks to protect, restore and increase the city’s tree canopy.

The meeting is set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at City Hall, 2 Park Plaza. Attendees will be asked for their perception of the current city tree canopy coverage, locations that may need more coverage, and tree-related practices led by citizens or local government that could be implemented but are not currently in place.

The study is funded by the USDA Forest Service and involves a partnership of the city, Georgia Forestry Commission and the Green Infrastructure Center. GIC will give a study progress report and discuss the value of trees in helping communities comply with stormwater permits, reduce flooding and meet surface water quality goals.
