The Alpharetta City Council on Monday night signed off on the final concept design plan to transform a former Fulton County branch library into a community arts facility, at an estimated cost of $2.8 million.
Staff will now begin working on the next design phase for the proposed Alpharetta Arts Center at 238 Canton St. Fulton donated the building to the city last fall after opening a new library at 10 Park Plaza, next to City Hall.
Responding to a series of public meetings where residents said want they wanted in an arts center, Houser Walker Architecture drew up plans showing the interior of the single-story building dominated by single large “flex space” that can be used as an auditorium, gallery or banquet hall.
A Black Box theater has a movable wall and opens onto the large flex space, for expanded seating options. Three “flex studio” classrooms are divided by movable partitions, and a ceramics/heavy arts studio has an outdoor patio with kiln. There’s also a media studio.
