The planning of Alpharetta’s future downtown parking deck will go in a different direction, after city officials tapped a new engineering firm to help them finalize the project.
Norcross-based Pond and Company will replace the project's previous consultant, Kimley-Horn and Associates. Both Kimley-Horn and the city agreed to the change earlier this week, said assistant city administrator James Drinkard.
The city wants to erect a parking deck on the west side of Main Street to serve shoppers frequenting downtown. City council members are keen on a location around Milton Avenue, Old Roswell and Roswell Street — dubbed "Site A" — because of its closeness to the shopping district.
Some residents were concerned about a possible conflict of interest with the initial company, since imley-Horn's office is located on Roswell Street — footsteps away from where city council members want to build the deck, Drinkard said.
Since August, hundreds of residents have demanded that council members consider an alternate location further down on Milton Avenue next to Rest Haven Cemetery, “Site D.” Those supporters believe building the parking deck there would preserve popular downtown gathering spots.
Council members were scheduled to vote on the two locations earlier this month. They postponed their vote once they discovered mistakes in earlier plans from Kimley-Horn related to traffic flow in and out of Site A.
