The Alpharetta City Council gave initial approval Tuesday to an ordinance allowing certain types of gaming machines in town.

The action is designed to remove restrictions on certain machines outlawed by the State Legislature in 2010. The language of the new state law would have limited businesses, like arcades, from owning certain machines that offered non-cash prizes.

The new ordinance would permit these machines as long as the non-cash payout is less than $5, and a certain level of skill is required to win.
