The Alpharetta City Council has voted to allow a carnival for 16 days – 12 days longer that ordinarily permitted – in the surface parking lot of North Point Mall.

Wade Shows Inc. had requested the variance for the temporary use at the mall, 1000 North Point Circle. With three days for set-up and two for tear-down, the carnival’s actual days of operation would be 11 days, June 1-11, according to a staff report to the council.

Staff generally agreed with the request, noting that North Point Mall and the surrounding area is zoned commercial, and there are no residential uses in the immediate vicinity. The variance is limited to 16 days a year and is not transferable.

Wade plans to operate the carnival in the parking lot between the Sears and JC Penney stores from 5 to 11 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 11 p.m. weekends. The carnival would have 18 to 20 rides, games, food and restroom facilities. It would not have animals, amplified noise, road closures, tents or alcoholic beverages, staff said.
