A 7-foot alligator captured off Tybee Island last week has been euthanized, according to a report.

Following a suggestion from a Georgia Department of Natural Resources official, the reptile was harvested for its meat and hide, and its head will be mounted, the Savannah Morning News reported.

Initial reports from Tybee Island police said that the alligator would be relocated. However, DNR official David Mixon told the paper relocation would not solve the problem.

“If you relocate him,” Mixon said, “he’s just going to be a problem in the next place you put him — especially when it comes to getting food from humans.”

A professional trapper was brought from Savannah after the alligator was spotted off Tybee Island Friday morning, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. Beaches were shut down until Friday afternoon, when the trapper caught the gator.

The incident came days after an alligator snatched a toddler at a lagoon at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando. The toddler’s body was found the next day.
