The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced free, archery-only deer hunts for disabled hunters and youth hunters at Allatoona Lake in December.
The hunts will take place at McKinney Campground. All hunters must bring their own equipment. Hunting blinds will be available by reservation.
Disabled hunters, confined to a wheelchair or Purple Heart recipients, are invited to hunt Dec. 5-6. Each hunter must have a valid Georgia Big Game License and can be accompanied by a non-hunting assistant. Disabled youth 15 years old or younger also can hunt these days; see rules for youth hunters.
Youth 15 or younger can hunt Dec. 7-8. They are not required to have a hunting license but must be accompanied by an adult hunting assistant, 21 or older, with a license.
Participants must make reservations and enter a drawing for one of 15 available hunting slots per day, by phone or in person, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday until Nov. 15, at the Allatoona Project Management Office, 1138 Ga. 20 Spur SE, Cartersville, 678-721-6700.
