The northbound lanes of Ga. 400 in Sandy Springs reopened just before 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, more than hours after a fiery crash involving a wrong-way driver shut down the highway.

The wreck happened just after 2 a.m. on Ga. 400 northbound at the Northridge Road exit, according to Sandy Springs police Capt. Steve Rose.

Rose said a man driving a Dodge Intrepid entered the exit ramp from Ga. 400, traveled the wrong way on the ramp then entered onto Ga. 400 northbound going southbound.

The Intrepid struck a street sweeper truck and burst into flames.

The occupants of the private street sweeper truck were not injured, but the Intrepid driver was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital with critical injuries that Rose said included burns.

"He just came off that ramp there and he was driving pretty fast," the street sweeper driver, William Forrester, told Channel 2 Action News. "I tried to miss him, but he just kept coming at me."

The wrong-way driver's name was not immediately available.

All northbound lanes of Ga. 400 remained closed until about 5:25 a.m.
