Grease caused a sewage spill in Sugar Hill Wednesday, officials said.

The spill happened at a manhole on Sugar Crossing Drive, Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources spokeswoman Karen Shields said.

Shields said the department was notified at 12:25 p.m. and the overflow was stopped at 5 p.m.

“The spill was approximately 6,216 gallons in volume and entered an unnamed tributary of Richland Creek,” Shields wrote in a news release.

Authorities raked the area and spread lime to mitigate the effects, before placing signs to inform residents.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Department was also notified.
