Ralston appoints hometown sheriff to state panel
House Speaker David Ralston has appointed his hometown sheriff to the state Board of Public Safety.
The Blue Ridge Republican named Fannin County Sheriff Dane Kirby to the panel that sets policy for the state Public Safety Department. His term will run through Jan. 20, 2014.
Kirby has been sheriff in Fannin since 2009. Before that, he served as a trooper with the Georgia State Patrol, as a deputy sheriff in Gilmer County and as an officer in the city of Blue Ridge.
