The long-awaited North DeKalb Senior Center finally opened Thursday, providing exercise classes, computer education and other activities for residents.
The $5.2 million center, located in Chamblee, was originally approved in 2012, but construction problems stalled the project's completion. DeKalb's government hired a new contractor earlier this year to finish the job.
It's the last of three senior centers recently built across the county. Senior centers in central and south DeKalb opened last year.
The facility includes an aerobic exercise room, multipurpose classroom, arts and crafts room, library, billiards room, game lobby, computer classroom, full-service catering kitchen and more.
“The center will serve as a welcoming gathering place where area seniors can learn new skills and participate in exciting activities,” said Interim DeKalb CEO Lee May in a statement.
The North DeKalb Senior Center is located at 3393 Malone Drive in Chamblee.
