A longtime DeKalb County water and sewer employee, Charles Lambert, has been appointed to serve as acting director for the county Department of Watershed Management.

Lambert, an assistant director in the department, replaces Director James Chansler, who recently announced his retirement after less than two years working for DeKalb. Chansler will continue assisting the county part-time until June.

Lambert will be responsible for handling day-to-day operations as well as overseeing $1.35 billion worth of major infrastructure upgrades to aging pipes and facilities, according to a Friday memo from DeKalb Chief Operating Officer Zach Williams announcing Lambert's appointment.

A nationwide search for a replacement watershed director is underway.
