The executive director of the Atlanta Streetcar project has resigned from his position after two years on the job.

Tim Borchers, who was hired in April 2013 to help bring the $98 million transportation project to fruition, resigned on April 26.

In his resignation letter, Borchers said the chance to work on a “historic and transformative project” was both a challenge and honor, writing that project’s success is “unparalleled in the nation” due to Mayor Kasim Reed and the streetcar team.

A spokeswoman from Reed’s office described Borchers as “instrumental” in the streetcar’s construction and completion. City officials raced to open the system’s doors by the end of 2014.

Channel 2 Actions News first reported Thursday that Borchers resigned. His last day is May 8.

The city is now searching for a replacement.
