Gwinnett County will spend up to $600,000 on traffic safety improvements at the new Buford High School.

The county Board of Commissioners Tuesday agreed to pay for the improvements on Buford Highway at the school. The money will pay for a new roadway, sidewalk, intersection and traffic signal upgrades. The money will come from a special sales tax for construction projects approved by voters in 2009.

The City of Buford will be responsible for any cost above $600,000. The Buford City Commission voted last summer to borrow $33 million to build the new school on 30 acres adjacent to the existing high school. The school is expected to open for the 2017-18 school year.
