Gwinnett County will get a new senior center near Snellville under a proposal approved by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Tuesday.

Commissioners awarded a $2.24 million contract to Hogan Construction Group LLC to build the new facility on Bethany Church Road, adjacent to the Centerville Community Center and the Centerville Library. Construction is expected to start soon. The money comes from a 2014 special sales tax for construction projects.

The 8,500-square-foot, single-story senior center will feature a dining room, warming kitchen, a multi-purpose room, a billiards area and other facilities.

Gwinnett operates senior centers in Buford, Lawrenceville and Norcross, and also at Bethesda Park and George Pierce Park. A satellite senior center opened at the Centerville Community Center in 2013.
