Fulton County commissioners will decide Wednesday if they want to spend nearly $300 million to fix buildings plagued with broken elevators and leaky roofs — and to maintain them, so they don’t again fall into disrepair.

A proposal before the board calls for millions of dollars over five years to pay for the fixes, and to do preventative maintenance on county facilities. Commissioners will decide whether to issue bonds to cover $77 million in costs.

Years of underspending put the county’s buildings in bad shape, said Dennis King, Fulton’s facilities project director. It will take years of spending to fix the damage.
