DeKalb readies plan to replace water pipes in historic neighborhoods

Construction crews are headed to neighborhoods near Emory University as part of DeKalb County's continued overhaul of its aging water and sewer systems.

The Briarcliff Corridor Water Infrastructure Replacement Project calls for the installation of new water pipes in neighborhoods in Druid Hills. Affected roads include North Decatur Road, Oxford Road, Harvard Road, Springdale Road, Cornell Road, Oxford Road, Oakdale Road, Emory Road, Lullwater Road, The By Way, Cameron Court and Briardale Lane.

DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond and representatives from the Department of Watershed Management will make a presentation about the project during a community meeting on Aug. 29. The meeting will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Fernbank Elementary School, 157 Heaton Park Drive.

The county previously announced the project as part of a $20 million overhaul replacing water pipes that were installed as much as 100 years ago in neighborhoods near Briarcliff and North Decatur.

Aging pipes have led to reports of low water pressure at homes and business in these areas.

The problems are widespread. Two separate water main

DeKalb has already completed pipe replacement projects this year in North Druid Hills and Glendale areas.
