DeKalb County's second government-owned compressed natural gas station is now open, providing fill-ups for garbage trucks, pickups and other vehicles that run on natural gas.

The station, located off I-285 near Memorial Drive, will be used primarily by county vehicles, and it’s also available to the general public.

DeKalb Sanitation Director Billy Malone said the county has saved more than $1 million in fuel costs since its first CNG station opened at Seminole Landfill in Ellenwood in 2012. There are also four other CNG stations in DeKalb, the most in Georgia, he said.

“Generally the largest trucks don’t have the best fuel economy, so it makes sense to use a cleaner and cheaper fuel,” Malone said.

Interim DeKalb CEO Lee May, county commissioners and Atlanta Gas Light held a ribbon cutting for the station Thursday.

It’s located at the county’s Central Transfer Station at 3720 Leroy Scott Drive near Decatur.
