Clayton County residents will see higher water and sewer rates starting in June.
The Clayton County Water Authority approved a 2 percent rate hike for water rates and a 3 percent hike for sewer rates in January. The new base rate for water for single family residential customers will be $10.05, and the new base rate for sewer for single family residential customers will be $10.73.
Rates went into effect May 1 and will be reflected in the June bills. Stormwater fees will remain the same. The last water and sewer rate increase took effect in January 2014.
Average residential customers - those who use about 4,000 gallons a month - will see their monthly bill go up by $2.10.
The water authority operates solely on water, sewer and stormwater revenues. It maintians 1,500 miles of water lines, 1,300 miles of sewer lines, 500 miles of stormwater pipe, three water reclamation facilities and three water production facilities.
The new rate hikes will go toward financing 95 master plan projects totaling more than $367 million, according to P. Michael Thomas, general manager of the water authority. Most of the project focus on fixing a large part of the water authority’s sewer system which is about 50 to 60 years old.
