Georgia is closer to becoming the 39th state to consider arts as an economic development issue after a House vote Thursday.

House Bill 264 would move the state Council for the Arts from its current home in the state budget office to under the umbrella of the state Department of Economic Development.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Amy Carter, R-Valdosta, said the change was specifically requested by Gov. Nathan Deal as a way to tie tourism and the arts by setting up grants, policies and evaluations for programs and events

“As a result, the arts will be promoted more successfully in Georgia communities,” she said.

The House approved the measure 155-3. It now heads to the state Senate for review and vote.
