The race to be Gwinnett County’s next Superior Court judge is a blowout.

With more than 96 percent of Gwinnett’s precincts reporting, Tracey Mason had accrued more than 63 percent of the vote over opponent Veronica Cope.

Cope and Mason both advanced to Tuesday's nonpartisan runoff from May's five-candidate primary. Mason will now replace retiring Judge Tom Davis.

Mason is a longtime local attorney and legal mediator and a former Municipal Court judge in Duluth. A Gwinnett native, she is the niece of former commission chairman and real estate tycoon Wayne Mason.

Cope, a Grayson resident, has practiced law for 15 years, most recently focusing on criminal defense. A victory Tuesday would’ve made her Gwinnett’s first black Superior Court judge.
