Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell officially kicked off his campaign for mayor on Wednesday.

“On this day, exactly seven years ago, I announced my bid to run for President of Atlanta City Council,” Mitchell said in his announcement, he wrote on his Facebook page. “Back then, I believed in the promise this city holds. Today, I am reaffirming that belief by declaring my commitment serve on another level — as Mayor of this great city.”

Mitchell is one of six people who have so far declared their candidacy for the 2017 election. Others include State Rep. Margaret Kaiser; Georgia Equality lobbyist and former Atlanta council president Cathy Woolard; and Peter Aman, the first chief operating officer to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

In April, a 14-page complaint filed with the Georgia ethics commission days before Mitchell announced his candidacy alleged he had committed multiple campaign finance violations.

The complaint, filed with the Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission, included violations from spending campaign finance cash on Atlanta Falcons tickets and accepting speaker fees in excess of state limits, to failing to register his Political Action Committee and using campaign funds to reimburse himself for unrelated expenses.

Mitchell said previously the complaint is “completely without merit.”

“It’s political silly season, ” Mitchell said in April. “The timing (of the complaint) speaks for itself.”
