The survivor of a car crash last month that killed four University of Georgia students received her degree Friday night as she remained in critical condition in a rehabilitation facility.

Agnes Kim, a senior at UGA from Snellville, was awarded her marketing degree during the university’s undergraduate spring commencement ceremony at Sanford Stadium in Athens.

“The individuals who make up the University of Georgia care deeply about this institution, and they care deeply about one another. We build meaningful connections here, and together we are a family,” President Jere Morehead said during the ceremony.

“The strength and compassion of the UGA community were evident recently when we came together to support one another after the devastating car accident that took the lives of four students and critically injured another, Agnes Kim, who is graduating this evening in absentia as she remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries,” Morehead said.

Kim, 21, has remained hospitalized since the April 27 crash in Oconee County. She was the driver of a car that crossed the center line and crashed into another vehicle, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The four passengers in the car, also UGA students — Kayla Leigh Canedo, 19, of Alpharetta; Brittany Katherine Feldman, 20, of Alpharetta; Christina Devon Semeria, 19, of Milton; and Halle Grace Scott, 19, of Dunwoody — all died.

Kim was transferred to the brain unit of the Shepherd Center in Atlanta this week from Athens Regional Medical Center for further treatment. Classmates have created an online fundraiser on the YouCaring.com website to assist her family with medical costs.

UGA graduated more than 5,500 students during commencement ceremonies this week.
