Two students from Georgia are participating in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Fifth-grader Charles Li, of Martinez, and eighth-grader Sumedh Garimella, of Duluth, both spelled words correctly Wednesday during the event.
The students made it through two rounds of the oral competition. Semi-finalists were expected to be announced Wednesday evening. The final round of the event – which is being broadcast live on ESPN — concludes Thursday night.
The two Georgia students are among 281 winners of regional spelling bees participating at this year’s event.
In the Wednesday morning round of competition, Li spelled the word “jacamar” correctly. Garimella got “perennial” right.
In the afternoon round, Li spelled the word “oniomania” correctly while Garimella got “spelunker” correct.
Li, who is identified in the competition as speller No. 48, is sponsored by The Augusta Chronicle. He attends Stevens Creek Elementary School in Martinez.
Garimella, identified as speller No. 49, is sponsored by the Georgia Association of Educators. He attends Richard Hull Middle School in Duluth.
