Students attending the state’s technical colleges will see their tuition increase $4 per credit hour beginning this fall.
The board of the Technical College System of Georgia approved the increase Thursday during its monthly meeting in Atlanta. The increase applies to all 24 institutions within the system, which is expecting a fall enrollment of 160,000 students.
The move boosts the cost of a credit hour from $85 to $89, and it increases tuition for a full-time 15-hour credit load to $1,335.
The increase is needed to offset rising operational costs for the system, whose enrollment has declined from a high of 195,000 students three years ago, system Commissioner Ron Jackson said.
“TCSG tuition, even with the increase, remains relatively low compared to other states,” Jackson said. “Still, we understand the concerns of students and their families about adding any additional costs.”
The tuition increase is expected to generate $8 million for the system.
The TCSG vote follows a similar across-the-board tuition increase approved last month for the state’s public colleges and universities within the University System of Georgia.
