Almost a year after a former student journalist at Georgia Perimeter College filed a lawsuit against the state Board of Regents for failing to turn over public records concerning the school’s $25 million budget shortfall, the case is being heard in court this week.

David Schick, who was at the time editor of GPC’s student newspaper, accused the University of System of Georgia of not complying with his open records request, overcharging for records and using delaying tactics.

Schick sought to investigate GPC's shortfall, revealed in May 2012, that eventually led to the layoff of 282 employees, the resignation of the college's president and a sanction by an accrediting agency.

Schick has chronicled his ongoing dealings with the Board of Regents and his lawsuit on his personal blog.

The case began Wednesday in Fulton County Superior Court and is being heard by Judge Robert McBurney. The case is expected to last through the end of the week.
