Update: Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice marks 5 years leading Morehouse School of Medicine

Valerie Montgomery Rice took over Morehouse School of Medicine this week, becoming the first women to lead the medical school as president and dean.

Montgomery Rice, who began her new position July 1, is replacing retiring president John Maupin Jr., who had led the institution since 2006.

Montgomery Rice is an obstetrician and gynecologist, and was named executive vice president and dean of Morehouse School of Medicine in 2011. Prior to joining Morehouse, she served in various administrative and leadership positions at Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tenn., and Kansas School of Medicine.

An inauguration ceremony for Montgomery Rice is scheduled for Sept. 11.
