Early Wednesday morning, state Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan, D-Austell, announced she was conceding defeat in her campaign for the Democratic nomination in the race for Georgia school superintendent.

Morgan was beaten by Valarie Wilson, former chairwoman of the City Schools of Decatur school board, who will face either Mike Buck or Richard L. Woods, competing on the Republican side of the race.

Morgan was an early favorite to win the Democratic nomination, but her support for a 2012 constitutional amendment clarifying the state’s authority to create charter schools angered many in her party. Some Democratic officials backed Wilson in the primary and in the runoff.

Morgan issued a statement Wednesday morning saying she had suspended her campaign.

“After spending several months on the campaign trail, I am respectfully conceding the election to my opponent and I am suspending my campaign for State School Superintendent,” Morgan’s statement read. “I am beyond humbled by the support our campaign has garnered from all over, and I am proud of how our campaign has helped to catalyze an important conversation within the Democratic Party about how we deliver education to our children. Our work now is to continue this discussion, respectfully and intentionally, to make sure we do what is in the best interest of children.”
