Morehouse College president John Wilson is developing a monthly discussion group in response to student activism in the Atlanta University Center.
Students from the AUC black colleges recently demanded that their schools do more to address sexual violence on their campuses, and sent administrators a list of 13 demands to keep students safe. Earlier this month, the students also participated in a national #StudentBlackOut rally in support of black students at the University of Missouri, and to address issues on their own campuses.
The dialogue sessions are intended to produce a tangible action item at the end of each meeting that demonstrates the campus community’s understanding of Black Lives Matter issues and needed solutions, Wilson recently told students during a discussion at the president’s house.
The monthly dialogues officially begin next year and will be held at the Davidson House Center for Excellence, the president’s residence.
“At Morehouse, we want to get this right,” Wilson said.
Wilson will be joined by students and faculty from Morehouse, as well as, Spelman and Clark Atlanta University to talk about issues including sexual assault on college campuses, violence against black people and a more responsible embrace of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and allied students.
