Families of students at hundreds of metro Atlanta schools are now eligible for six months of free Internet service through a new offer from Comcast.

Comcast announced today a plan to provide six months of free broadband service to any new family in Georgia and nationwide who applies to its Internet Essentials program and is approved through Sept. 20. After the first six months, the service is $9.95 a month plus tax. Customers in the program are also eligible to purchase a computer for under $150.

The offer is open to families of students who are eligible for federally subsidized free/reduced-price meals—or who attend schools where at least 70 percent of students are eligible for free/reduced-price meals.

“The promotion is designed to provide a buzz and try and entice people to taste this,” Comcast Executive Vice President David Cohen said. “The theory is if you taste it, you’ll like it, you’ll buy the food,” and the Internet.
