Georgia has been awarded several million dollars in federal grant money to expand access to child care services for infants and toddlers.

The Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership Grant is $4.3 million annually for five years to deliver services to infants, toddlers, and families in metro Atlanta through partnerships with existing child care centers and family child care homes.

The grant, announced Wednesday by President Barack Obama at a White House summit on early childhood education, will be administered by Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL).

Georgia had also applied for millions in federal grant money to expand the state’s pre-kindergarten program to serve impoverished, high-need communities around the state but was not among the states to receive that funding. Georgia’s pre-k program serves close to 84,000 four-year-olds.
