Fulton County Schools was a finalist for federal Race to the Top education funding, but the U.S. Department of Education announced Tuesday that the district was not among the winning districts.

Rockdale County Public Schools, Morgan County Charter School System and Haralson County Schools joined Fulton as Georgia finalists whose grant applications were rejected by the department.

The state has already been awarded a $400 million grant from the Race to the Top program, which is designed to encourage new approaches to improving student performance.
