The Fulton County school board approved a $42.85 million construction project to build a new Roswell middle school.

The new Crabapple Middle School will be built on Woodstock Road near the Jones Road intersection. It will replace the existing school off Crabapple Road.

It will be about 66,000 square feet larger than the current building. In October, the current Crabapple school enrolled 932 students, according to state numbers.

The district had initially planned to rebuild the school on the current site but decided to move it after studying costs and other site issues.

"These included sitework complications related to building over a stream on the existing property as well as challenges with the three-year phasing plan that would keep students and staff on the site while the new school was built. These increased costs led the school district to reconsider other options and place the project temporarily on hold," the district said in an online post about the project.

The district purchased 29 acres on Woodstock Road for the new school, which is scheduled to open in 2021.

The project includes a 189,764-square-foot school with 76 classrooms, a cafeteria, gym and a media center.  Outside, the school grounds will include a play field, track, two basketball courts and four tennis courts, according to information released by the district.

The board voted last week to award the construction contract to Evergreen Construction.

The project will be paid for using proceeds from a one-penny sales tax.
