The DeKalb County Board of Education will meet Wednesday night for a previously unscheduled meeting — its fifth consecutive week of called meetings — to likely continue work toward naming a new superintendent.
The meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m.
No decision is expected from the meeting, as the agenda includes just calling the meeting to order and immediately entering into a closed session “for the purpose of discussing permitted matters regarding personnel.”
The board has met each of the previous four weeks about the next DeKalb County School District superintendent. With Ramona Tyson set to retire at the end of the month, the board has less than four weeks to decide on a successor, be it on an interim or permanent basis.
Rudy Crew was announced in late April as the district's single finalist for superintendent, with the majority of board members praising the selection during a virtual meeting held via Zoom due to COVID-19 meeting restrictions and aired on the district's public access channel. In a surprising move after the state-mandated 14-day waiting period between announcing superintendent finalists, the board voted not to hire Crew.
Crew's selection received immediate opposition from parents, residents and local government watchdog groups who questioned his history. That history includes stints at some of the country's largest school districts, along with allegations Crew bullied subordinates and obstructed a rape investigation involving a 14-year-old victim.
Crew supporters, including the Georgia Federation of Teachers, protested again Monday outside the school district's Stone Mountain headquarters to get the board to reconsider not hiring the 40-plus-year veteran educator.
