The death of a 13-year-old Virginia girl, allegedly at the hands of a college student she met online, raises questions of how closely parents ought to monitor their children’s virtual lives.

Police believe Nicole Madison Lovell met Virginia Tech engineering student and track standout David Eisenhauer, 18, on a social media site. Eisenhauer is charged with kidnapping and first-degree murder in the death of Nicole, whose body was found Saturday in North Carolina, four days after she disappeared from her home. Another Virginia Tech student, Natalie Keepers, 19, faces charges of improper disposal of a body.

Like many girls her age, Nicole spent a lot of time online, posting selfies and talking about dating. Her mother said she had never heard of the site where her daughter purportedly met Eisenhauer.

Teens have always lived secret lives, but have their worlds become even more mysterious to parents now that much of it is spent online?
