Clark Atlanta University has a new public safety director, but won’t discuss why it made the leadership change.

The university’s president, Ronald A. Johnson, sent an announcement to students, faculty and staff that Debra Ann Williams is the interim director, effective Wednesday. A university spokesman did not respond to questions about what happened to her predecessor, Joe L. Little Jr.

Little Jr., a CAU alumnus, was named chief in 2016. He worked 26 years in the Atlanta Police Department before joining CAU in 2012.

Williams was previously second-in-command with the Clayton County Public Schools Department of Public Safety. Johnson wrote Williams will conduct a “full review” of the department.

The lack of details about the change come as the the university faces criticism that it hasn't clearly communicated about why some students are unable to move into their dorms.

CAU officials did not respond to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s questions Tuesday or Wednesday about temporary housing, how many students require it or when they may get into regular housing.
