Cherokee County School District student enrollment had 40,663 students showing up for class on the second day of school Tuesday.

The school district is the ninth largest in the state.

While the total has not yet reached the peak-enrollment projection of 41,673, it increased by 522 students from Monday’s opening of school, as students continued arriving after their summer break.

The current total of 40,663 also is an increase of 736 students from last school year’s second-day enrollment.
