The Cherokee County Board of Education has named the finalist for the school superintendent’s job.

The board chose Brian Hightower, a longtime Cherokee educator and currently the deputy superintendent for school operations, programs and support, to take over for the retiring Superintendent Frank Petruzielo. The board members will consider his appointment at a special called meeting Friday, Dec. 18, at 6 p.m. at the Historic Canton High School Auditorium, 111 Academy Street in Canton. The meeting will include a presentation regarding Hightower’s credentials and experience; the public will have a chance to respond; and the board could vote.

Applicants from four states applied.

Hightower earned a bachelor’s degree from Kennesaw State University, a master’s of Education at North Georgia College and State University, an Education Specialist degree from Georgia State University and a doctorate in education from Samford University.

He spent 30 years teaching and administering schools, all but one of those years in the Cherokee system.
