The shocking cellphone video of a South Carolina deputy pulling a high school student out of her desk last year and seemingly tossing her to the floor led to a national outcry and his firing two days later.
However, the local prosecutor now says no charges will be lodged against former Deputy Ben Fields.
The decision was based in part on interviews with the students and educators at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C., who witnessed the incident firsthand and apparently saw something different from outraged viewers. The interviews include statements that the student has been disruptive and had resisted numerous demands that she leave and that the “slamming” was not as extreme as it appeared on the widely circulated video.
