Ronald Miller, teacher at Price Middle School in Atlanta, showed how he obtained teaching supplies without digging into his own pocket or Atlanta School District funds recently. He received classroom supplies worth more than $5,000 with six projects through DonorsChoose.org, a nonprofit organization that bridges the gap between donors and public school teachers.

Students from Cobb and Paulding County middle schools are finalists of the fourth annual visual arts contest, waterSmart waterArt. A panel of local artists and conservationists judged artwork that merged artistic talent and a passion for water conservation. Out of the 180 students that submitted work, the panel picked twelve finalists. Joanna Frazier, eight grade student from Lovinggood Middle School in Cobb County, received the highest score for her submission of art that portrayed water conservation in daily activities. All 12 finalists will be features in the 2014 waterSmart waterArt calendar. The submissions are currently on display this month at The Art Station-Big Shanty, where there will be a reception on Nov. 14.

More than 1,300 Latino teenagers from across Georgia came to Emory University on Saturday for a the Latino Youth Leadership Conference — a day of motivational speakers, workshops and activities designed to encourage students about college and careers. This is the conference’s third annual year, and it was presented by AT&T. This year’s event included speeches by Gabe Zalazar, Alicia Abella and Sonia Nazario. Workshops featured topics such as scholarships and financial aid, college applications, building brands and science careers. Finally, the students had the opportunity to attend a college and career fair that hosted institutions such as Georgia Tech and Delta Airlines.

After students at Lakeside High School in DeKalb County started a social media campaign, Rujeko Mazaiwana (known as "JJ" amongst students) won the Homecoming King title a couple of weeks ago. JJ was diagnosed with autism. His classmates created the social media campaign to get "JJ" elected Homecoming King.
