Tushar Mittal, a junior at Dutchtown High School in Henry County, was recognized recently with several academic honors. He placed second in the NASA Science Writing Challenge. He was third out of 1,500 students who competed in the SI International Science and Engineering Fair. He was also named academic athlete of the year at Dutchtown High for the 2011-12 school year. He won first place in the Henry County Fair and first place at the Georgia State Science Fair.

Madelyn Carlson, a team editor of Decatur High School's Carpe Diem magazine, has been recognized by the National Scholastic Press Association with an honorable mention in the national Feature Story of the Year competition. A junior at Decatur High, she is one of 10 students named in the category. The contest honors student work in several categories: News, Feature, Editorial, Sports and Diversity. There were nearly 800 entries in all the categories. Madelyn's 2011 story, "I want to eat your brains" details a senior's experience working as a production assistant for the zombie-themed AMC show "The Walking Dead." Decatur High publishes its student magazine five times a year. The print staff works with the school's broadcast program to maintain a website: 3ten.org.

Elaine Brown, a freshman at Locust Grove High School, competed at the National HOSA Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida last summer. HOSA is an organization for future health professionals. Several students in Henry County schools are active in the organization. Elaine competed against students from around the U.S. in research persuasive speaking. She talked about the need for "fat" taxes.

Three Gwinnett County school employees have been selected to take part in the 2012-2013 class of Leadership Gwinnett, a program of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce. They are: Jorge Gomez, executive director for administration & policy in the CEO/Superintendent's office; Jennifer Fero, assistant principal at Grayson High Technical Education Program and Jennifer Dunn, Pharr Elementary School teacher and 2012 Teacher of the Year.
