Robert Heaberlin, principal of Lee Middle School in Coweta County, has received the Association for Middle Level Education Distinguished Educator Award. The award, sponsored by Pearson, will be presented to Heaberlin on Nov. 9, at the group's annual conference on Portland, Ore. "Dr. Bob," as he is known by his students and colleagues, is in his 40th year as an educator. He has been a teacher at all levels, a high school coach and has served as a principal at elementary, middle and high schools. He has been active in professional organizations, serving as president of the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders and the Georgia Association of Middle School Principals.

The Crews Middle School band is one of four middle schools in the state to receive a Georgia Music Educators Association Exemplary Performance Award. The band at the Gwinnett County school is led by teachers Frank Folds and Amanda Hertel. The award honors bands that consistently earn superior ratings at Large Group Performance Evaluations, Solo and Ensemble Evaluations, and have members in the Georgia All-State Band.

Brookwood High Schools's Bronco Marching Band earned the title of Grand Champions at the Yellow Jacket Classic Marching Band Competition in Rockmart. The Gwinnett band was awarded several honors including first in class in the categories of band, percussion, overall color guard, and second in class for drum majors. Teachers Laura Stanley and Rudy Wilson lead the band.

Brigid Burns of Atlanta has received a G.A. Burson Scholarship awarded by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Each year the college awards more than $100,000 in scholarships to students. Burns is a sophomore majoring in biological science. She plans to attend veterinary school and is in the UGA Honors Program. She is active in several student activities such as intramural volleyball and the Pre-Vet Club. The G.A. Burson scholarship is awarded to a student in the college based on merit and high academic standing, as well as character and leadership ability. Burns is one of nine students who received the 2012-2013 award.
