All the students at Vanderlyn Elementary School in DeKalb County marched in a Vocabulary Parade on Monday. They flaunted their costumes that created words like metamorphosis, medieval and sunflower. The parade is part of the school’s effort to promote literacy and word recognition. It was based off the book “Miss Alanineus, A Vocabulary Disaster.”

Marietta High School in Marietta is hosting the SportsUnited Program, a U.S. State Department cultural exchange between high school basketball athletes in the United States and Turkey. The program brought 14 high school athletes, one coach and one youth trainer from Turkey to spend two weeks in Washington D.C. and Marietta. The exchange aims to use sports diplomacy as a way to increase dialogue and understanding between people from different countries.

Rob Ware, a science teacher at Creekland Middle School in Cherokee County, won a Georgia Power New Teacher Award, which included a $1,000 grant from the utility company that recognized his outstanding work as a first-year teacher. The company's manager presented Ware and the school's principal with the check on Wednesday. The school plans to use the money to fund an outdoor classroom area. Ware said that he decided to build something for the entire school because many of his fellow teachers donated school supplies to his classroom.

Rachel Whitman, a senior at Cherokee High School in Cherokee County, was one of ten students nationwide to win the national "Ultimate Mentor Adventure" STEM competition, which was sponsored by Disney and Marvel. The ten students, selected out of 250 applicants, are in California this week to tour major science research facilities. Whitman will be able to speak to women working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields and attend the "Thor: The Dark World" movie premiere. As part of their applications, students had to interview women working in STEM fields.

Gerald Meixiong of Lakeside High School in Evans will advance to the national finals of the Siemens STEM Competition after being awarded top honors at the regional competition at Georgia Institute of Technology. Meixiong's research identified potential targets for therapeutic drugs for cancer.
