Twelve Atlanta public schools seniors have been named 2013 Posse Scholars and have earned four-year, full-tuition scholarship worth approximately $100,000. The Posse Foundation recruits students who demonstrate outstanding academic and leadership potential. The students will spend the rest of the school year and summer in college prep training classes. The winners, their high schools and colleges are: Autumn Rivers, Grady High, Bard College; Jasmine Thomas, Douglass High, Bard College; Elias Flores, Carver School of the Arts, Brandeis University; Kourtney Mosley, Washington Banking, Finance & Investment High, Brandeis University; Jordan Carter, Mays High, Boston University; Jameson Hollis, North Atlanta High; Boston University; Demetrius Moore, Therrell High STEMS, Texas A&M University; Diana Powers, Grady High, The College of Wooster; Divine Butts, Jackson High, Syracuse University; Dulce Gallo-Blanco, Benjamin E. Mays High, Syracuse University; Demarquez Grissom, Carver Health Sciences & Research, Syracuse University and Bilal Vaughn, Grady High, Syracuse University.

Darnell Fine, a teacher at Atlanta Neighborhood Charter Middle School, is among five teachers selected for the Southern Poverty Law Center's award for excellence in culturally responsive teaching. The $1,000 award will be presented later this month in Washington, D.C. It recognizes educators who have demonstrated excellence in teaching students from diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Freedom Wright, a senior at Holy Innocents' Episcopal School, has been named an Allstate Give Back Day Hero. The award is given by Allstate Insurance Co. to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The awards program encourages people to volunteer in their communities. Allstate will donate $2,500 to the charity of her choice. Freedom works to raise awareness of children in foster care. She also volunteers at the Atlanta Fulton County Library and St. Francis Table, a soup kitchen. She recently earned a full scholarship to Syracuse University through the Posse Foundation.
