Ben Franklin Academy student Adele McLees was the 2016 first-place winner and Emma Louise Tracy placed second in the William H. Izlar, Jr. Poetry Contest. Prizes are given annually during National Poetry Month for the best four poems entered by Ben Franklin Academy students in the contest, which was established by the Mary Ryan and Henry G. Kurt Foundation in memory of Ben Franklin Academy's great friend and former longtime overseer, Bill Izlar, who was a lifelong lover of poetry.
