Reading, writing, arithmetic, and... running?
Atlanta Public Schools will host its first 5-kilometer run on May 4, with proceeds from the race benefiting district teachers in honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week.
Superintendent Meria Carstarphen, who speaks often of her love of running, announced the inaugural APS Rocks and Runs 5K and Character Fun Run on her blog Wednesday.
She said: “running has not only become an essential part of my exercise routine and a marathon-sized stress reliever, but it also has served as an engagement opportunity with students and colleagues across Atlanta Public Schools.”
The race will take place at 8 a.m. May 4 at Brown Middle School, 765 Peeples St. SW, and follow a route along the Beltline’s westside trail.
Registration is $30 for runners who sign up by April 14. Registration for the children’s “fun run” is $10.
The price for the run includes a race bib and commemorative T-shirt. Proceeds will pay for an appreciation gift for APS teachers and paraprofessionals, who can register to run the race at no cost.
Runners are encouraged to wear their favorite Atlanta school shirt. Participating children are urged to dress up as their favorite book character.
