About 50 employees will be hired in Atlanta Public Schools to help at-risk children and improve student performance, according to the city school system’s budget approved this week.

The $4 million Student Support Team initiative is designed to reach students who are having difficulty learning and to reduce suspensions and absences.

Board Chairman Courtney English said school principals overwhelmingly asked for stronger Student Support Teams, which target students who need additional academic and behavioral assistance.
