Atlanta Public Schools is a district in recovery, Superintendent Meria Carstarphen said at her first annual State of the Schools Address Tuesday.

“We are rebuilding just about everything,” she said during the speech at North Atlanta High School.

Since Carstarphen officially started work in July, APS has launched an attendance campaign, filled principal and teacher vacanies, and started to make changes in the district’s central office.

Putting the right people in place, in schools and elsewhere in the district, is key to improving APS, Carstarphen said.

“Everything depends on that talent strategy,” she said.

Carstarphen was scheduled to speak at a similar event Tuesday evening at Douglass High School.
