The Atlanta school district could close one school, merge four others and put five other schools under the management of charter school groups, according to a district announcement this evening.

Kindezi, which currently operates two charter schools in Atlanta, would work with Gideons Elementary School.

Purpose Built Schools, a partner to Drew Charter School, would work with Thomasville Heights Elementary, Slater Elementary, Price Middle School and Carver High School.

Superintendent Meria Carstarphen is also recommending:

  • Merging Grove Park Intermediate School with Woodson Primary School;
  • Closing Bethune Elementary School and openining a new school in the former Kennedy Middle School; and
  • Merging Connally Elementary School with Venetian Hills Elementary.
